Squamous Cell Carcinoma

What is: Squamous Cell Carcinoma?

Another type of skin cancer is called Squamous cell carcinoma; it's the most common skin cancer after basal cell carcinoma, afflicting nearly a quarter million Americans each year. "Squamous Cell" may occur on all areas of the body; including the mucous membranes, but are most common in areas exposed to the sun.

DEADLY SKIN CANCER

Squamous cell carcinomas can be fatal. They usually remain confined to the upper layers of the skin for some time, but eventually they penetrate the underlying tissues if not taken care of. In a small percentage of cases, they do spread to other tissues and organs. When this happens, they can kill you.

The Causes of Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Doctor's say that: "exposure to sunlight causes most cases of Squamous Cell Carcinoma." If you spent a lot of time running around as a child without proper sunscreen protection you have a good chance to get them on the face, the neck, a bald scalp, the hands, shoulders, arms, and back. Another typical location for Squamous Cell skin cancer, is the rim of the ear and the lower lip. They are especially vulnerable to the development of this type of skin cancer.

Sometimes, a Squamous cell carcinoma will pop up spontaneously on what appears to be otherwise normal, healthy, undamaged skin. Some researchers believe that this tendency to develop this cancer may be inherited. It may also occur where the skin has suffered certain of injuries like burns, long-standing sores that never healed, sites that previously had beenexposed to X-ray numerous times, or, exposure to certain chemicals such as arsenic and petroleum by-products can cause squamous cell skin cancer.

Can I Get Squamous Cell Carcinoma?

Yes. If you have a substantial history of playing in the direct sun without wearing sun sunscreen, you can develop Squamous cell carcinoma. But the people most likely to develop this cancer have fair skin, light hair, blue, green, or gray eyes. If you job requires long hours outside or who spend extensive off-time in the sun are in particular risk of this cancer. The least likely to get Squamous Cell are those of Africian decent. More than 60% of the skin cancers that they do develop, however, are Squamous cell carcinomas.

Skin Cancer Warning Signs

These are the warning signs of Squamous Cell: A wart-like growth that crusts and occasionally bleeds. A persistent, scaly red patch with irregular borders that sometimes crusts or bleeds. An open sore that bleeds and crusts and persists for weeks. An elevated growth with a central depression that occasionally bleeds. A growth of this type may rapidly increase in size. Contact your physician if you have any questions or concerns about Squamous cell carcinoma.
